A PATCHWORK HISTORY OF RURAL LIFE

THERE IS ONLY ONE OF EACH QUILT

Fields of colour, a familiar favourite cloth patched into place, a play of fabric. All pieced together and covered with tight running stitches. These vintage quilts have been cherished for years, worn out, re-made and given new life. They are medium-weight and big personality.

JAMDANI
HANDWOVEN

In Bengal, the humid climate demands an exceptionally fine, diaphanous weave. The resulting cloth is light and airy, able to catch the faintest breeze. Such cloths are known by the poetic term "woven air."  Traditional dye techniques evolved to work with these exceptionally fine threads without breaking them.

YOU SUPPLY THE CREATIVITY,
WE SUPPLY THE REST.

It's easy to express yourself through making. When you embellish with stitchwork it is as if you are drawing a line with thread. Add some colour and a stitch in just the right place. Bring your materials and your ideas together.

CARRY YOUR LIFE IN A KANTHA QUILT

THERE IS ONLY ONE OF EACH QUILT BAG

We've sewn a limited number of our Kantha quilts into bags. These are large cloth bags that can hold a picnic or your haul from the farmer's market. They are based on two popular Maiwa bags - the Market Bag and the Studio Bag. Sizes and location of pockets are given in the listings.

Kahani means "Story"

This is a well-named dress. We brought it to the shore and matched its colour to the sky and the distant mountains.

The weavers of Bhujodi are known as some of the most accomplished artisans working in handloom today. They have a wide range of skills and can bring their traditional design sense to play in many formats. See, for example, this incredible selection of panel blankets, bed covers, throws, scarves, and shawls.

THE MUMBAI BLOCK PRINTERS

Over the centuries, communities of block printers have often migrated. When they do, their designs and ways of working change and evolve. This is certainly true of the Mumbai block printers. Originally dyers from Kachchh, Gujarat, they have taken the art of hand block printing in a completely new direction. Still working with natural dyes and traditional processes, they only work in contemporary designs they themselves create.

The Subtle Language of Adornment

The feeling we get when we encounter a beautiful textile is often similar to the feeling we get when we see a piece of jewellery. A sense of wonder, a little intake of breath, and the feeling that the piece is subtle. It is the result of tradition, skill, and the secrets of craft.

ABOUT BANDHANI

The design on these Bandhani shawls is the result of thousands of tiny knots tied on the cloth before it is dyed. After dyeing, the cloth retains a memory of the resist thread - it takes on a sculptural form unlike anything else.
