For years maiwa has been selling blank textiles—suitable for dyeing. In 2020, in collaboration with the genius of India Flint we launched the Journeywoman Collection. The best of cloth, sewn into garments, ready for your dye pot.

These coats are all about the sensual feeling of cloth. Layers of organic cotton are quilted together to give a weight that moves with you, keeps you warm, and yet has a light feeling that can be worn over almost anything. These are coats that speak about everything we love about textiles — cloth, stitch, pattern, colour, and feeling.

THE JASMINE COAT

One of our favourite coats with a standing collar and beautiful drape and swing. This version features 5 layers of wonderfully soft organic cotton sewn together with long vertical lines of stitching. The hems are left raw.  Hand-carved horn buttons down the front and deep side pockets.

THE HANDWOVEN QUILTED COAT

Three layers of lightweight handwoven cotton, quilted together. Naturally dyed hand woven cloth both inside and out, creating a reveal when you cuff a sleeve. An accentuated standing collar and an open front without closures.

MAIWA APRONS
GREAT FOR DYEING

We've designed these aprons to protect your clothes, while also being comfortable and easy to wear. They have pockets in just the right places. The fitting is generous, so you can put them over almost anything. We've made the aprons we always wished we could buy. Organic cotton and natural linen aprons are sewn with cotton thread and are great for dyeing.

A NATURAL DYE JOURNAL

At Maiwa, we love dye journals so much we designed our own.
This journal has been an idea of ours for a long time. It is like a combination of a travel journal and a natural dye journal. It is the journal we have always wanted. The paper is robust and can take a wealth of paste-ins — yarns, swatches, photos, leaves.

Ajrakh is a traditional block printing technique that has been practiced for centuries. Natural dyes are used to create eloquent geometric patterns on cotton that reveal a remarkable play between figure and line.

Blocks are hand-carved from hardwood and then used in a printing process that can involve between thirteen and twenty-one distinct steps. The many processes of scouring, washing, printing, dyeing, and final washing can take up to three weeks to complete. Much of the beauty and depth of ajrakh cloth comes from the intricacy of the imprint that is left by the artisans hand. Instantly recognizable—there is nothing like an ajrakh.
