JAMDANI
HANDWOVEN

In Bengal, the humid climate demands an exceptionally fine, diaphanous weave. The resulting cloth is light and airy, able to catch the faintest breeze. Such cloths are known by the poetic term "woven air."  Traditional dye techniques evolved to work with these exceptionally fine threads without breaking them.

This collection features some jamdani embellishments; a traditional technique where the artisan uses a supplementary weft thread to create intricate designs. At each throw of the shuttle, the weaver stops and turns the threads of the each motif by hand. As the weaver progresses a field with patterned embellishment emerges.

THREAD DYED COTTON
HANDWOVEN

This cloth is handwoven with fine cotton threads dyed with madder root, myrobalan, pomegranate rinds, marigolds, indigo & cutch. There are superfine and subtle stripes created in the warp - only 4 threads wide!  This is where colour mixing gets to happen on the loom and the final cloth is so beautiful to behold.
