100% ORGANIC COTTON
HAND BLOCK PRINTED WITH NATURAL DYES

The blacks are the delicate genius of natural dyes - with an unmatched richness and depth. The whites are the prefect contrast, a field of pattern in playful array.

This is clothing with movement and energy. Feel the flow, the style and grace of this remarkable collection.

Maiwa has worked with block printed fabric for over 30 years. This organic cotton has been hand block printed with natural dyes by world renowned ajrakh artisans. Light to medium weight fabric is perfect for garments and quilting.

The ajrakh artisans of Kachchh are most famous for the traditional ajrak process. The traditional process is a long one, involving several steps of washing and scouring the cloth, then additional steps to mordant the cloth, and still more steps as each colour is either directly block printed or resist block printed with natural dyes.

The same artisans have turned their hands to creating this geometrically stunning fabric. Leaves, patterns, stripes of dots,  each pattern shows the hands of a master.

Last year Maiwa's own Sophena Kwon made a tutorial in collaboration Vancouver's Wings + Horns (now on pause). It is a simple and easy way to introduce some complex patterning and also explore the fundamental reaction of iron and tannin.

TANNIN KITS & INDIGO KITS

PERFECT FOR SUMMER PROJECTS

Everything collected in one box. Our kits are a small gathering of everything you need to focus on the mysterious and magical process of creating your own colour.

THE TANNIN, IRON & SCARF KIT

A kit to make grey naturally. Myrobolan is a tannin rich dye that reacts with ferrous sulfate to create a neutral grey. You can get different shades of grey by using anywhere between 0.5% WOF to 4% WOF ferrous sulfate. Curious about "WOF"? We've got a free tutorial on it here (courtesy the Maiwa School of Textiles).

This Kit lets you dive into the world of tannin greys. Myrobolan, pomegranate rind & gallnut are all rich in tannin that reacts with ferrou to create a number of different greys. Gallnut gives a purplish-grey, myrobolan gives a neutral stone-grey and pomegranate gives a greenish-grey. You can get different depths of grey by using between 0.5% WOF to 4% WOF ferrous sulfate. Still curious about "WOF"? We have more information in our text-based instructions over at naturaldyes.ca.

Cloth has a voice – let it speak.
We tell a lot of stories about makers, traditions, colour, and cloth. But sometimes the voice of the cloth can speak for itself. Look. Listen carefully. Can you hear it?

A wooden block printing kit for creatives of all ages. Easy to stamp on paper and fabric using paint...fun to press into clay to make impressions.

These beautiful, professional fabric paints from France can be used on most fabrics, including blends with synthetics. To render them washfast simply iron for 1-2 minutes front and back. The colour range of this product is exquisite – the iridescent and opaques work well on both white and dark fabrics and the transparent or light colours are wonderful for blending, doing watercolor techniques, airbrushing etc. These fabric paints have excellent washfastness and lightfastness and leave the fabric with a very soft hand.
