In Bengal, the humid climate demands an exceptionally fine, diaphanous weave. The resulting cloth is light and airy, able to catch the faintest breeze. Such cloths are known by the poetic term "woven air." Traditional dye techniques evolved to work with these exceptionally fine threads without breaking them.
It's easy to express yourself through making. When you embellish with stitchwork it is as if you are drawing a line with thread. Add some colour and a stitch in just the right place. Bring your materials and your ideas together.
We've sewn a limited number of our Kantha quilts into bags. These are large cloth bags that can hold a picnic or your haul from the farmer's market. They are based on two popular Maiwa bags - the Market Bag and the Studio Bag. Sizes and location of pockets are given in the listings.
The weavers of Bhujodi are known as some of the most accomplished artisans working in handloom today. They have a wide range of skills and can bring their traditional design sense to play in many formats. See, for example, this incredible selection of panel blankets, bed covers, throws, scarves, and shawls.
Over the centuries, communities of block printers have often migrated. When they do, their designs and ways of working change and evolve. This is certainly true of the Mumbai block printers. Originally dyers from Kachchh, Gujarat, they have taken the art of hand block printing in a completely new direction. Still working with natural dyes and traditional processes, they only work in contemporary designs they themselves create.
