Experience the most beautiful of handmade textiles, skillfully woven, masterfully blockprinted, exquisitely embroidered: all animated through music and dance.

Our favourite event. The dyepots are exhausted, the last stitches are in place, the lectures are over although still a hot topic of conversation. We put on a spread, bring in a live band, and let loose.

Jorie Johnson has developed her own innovative approach to the 8,000-year-old central-Asian technique of feltmaking.

By working various materials such as silk, rayon, and mohair into the felt product, Jorie obtains painterly textures that are never static. Rich colours complement the fibre variations, resulting in a cloth that speaks with a voice of lightness and strength.

In January 2011, participants in the Maiwa Natural Dye Masterclass held in Bengal, India, were given a challenge: use the new knowledge gained during this workshop to create one exhibition-quality piece. The piece could have a value up to 20,000 Indian rupees ($500). Participants were given six months to complete the work.

Come and see what the artisans have produced to meet the challenge. Join us for the unveiling of a unique set of masterworks. There will be a short presentation, light food, and refreshments.

The Natural Dye Masterclass was sponsored by the Maiwa Foundation.

An exhibition of some of the exceptional work that is at the heart of Mexico’s traditional textile revival. The title of this exhibition is a translation of “Sna Jolobil” from Tzotzil. Sna Jolobil is also the name of one of the largest artisans’ co-operatives, representing over 800 weavers from 20 Tzotzil- and Tzeltal-speaking Mayan communities in the Chiapas highlands.

Join us for an exhibit of contemporary work from Chiapas, Oaxaca, and other areas. There will be a short presentation, light food, and refreshments.

Dorothy Caldwell’s talk illustrates how her textile art is an ongoing exploration of a sense of place.

Her long-time interest in how humans mark the landscape – through patterns of settlement, agricultural practices, and built heritage – are translated onto cloth through dyeing, printing, and stitching.

Jorie Johnson, owner of Joi Rae Textile Studio in southern Kyoto, Japan, will present a talk about her life, her interest in woolly animals, and her current work in the studio.

Kyoto, the last depot on the Silk Road, has proved to be a great inspiration. She also found fertile ground in the artistic and academic communities of this ancient capital.

In 2011, Michel Garcia returns from France to provide a survey of some of the most interesting facets of his work as a natural dye chemist.

Well versed in both botany and chemistry, Michel Garcia is perhaps most widely recognized as the founder of Couleur Garance, the garden of natural dye plants created in Lauris, France. As a curious investigator of dyestuff and dye procedures, Mr. Garcia has been asked to troubleshoot and fine-tune natural dye works all over the world.

For the dyer, the many choices of available colours can lead to confusion and disappointment in colour outcomes. This class will help students choose the pure colour that is suitable for developing a personal palette. Carol has dyed over 80 individual palettes which she will share with you through slide presentations, discussions, and hands-on dyeing. Brilliant yellows, passionate purples, rich reds, astounding blues, and soothing greens as well as the many necessary neutrals will be achieved through mixing using Procion MX dyes.

This two-day workshop will focus on a number of transfer processes that allow students to incorporate photo imagery into their work.

Students will learn methods for the transfer of both black-and-white and colour imagery onto cloth. These include transparent marker, iron-on, solvent, and gel-medium transfers. Students will also learn how to layer, collage, and transfer photocopied images of drawings, text, and photos onto cloth. The final piece will be embellished by hand embroidering, stencilling, and/or blockprinting to create a unique work that exhibits a layered complexity.

Explore pattern on fabric through the magic of the ancient Japanese resist technique known as shibori. Shades of indigo blue have been applied to textiles for hundreds of years, yet the blues and patterns given by indigo and shibori still have a contemporary look which works well for modern clothing and interiors.

This workshop will examine “the stitch” using the traditions of Indian Kantha Embroidery.

Kanthas served as bed coverings, sitting pads for special guests, as well as coverings for mirrors, combs, religious books, and other valuables. They were even made into envelope-like containers to hold money, betel leaf, and other valuables.

Bob Adams arrives from Lafayette, Indiana, to take students on an intense learning experience. This workshop is divided into two main sections covering discharge dyeing and quilting. During the first, participants will learn a variety of methods to safely discharge a colour on fabric along with the proper way to stop the destructive action. They will also learn where to use each method for the best results.

Silk felt. Silk paper. Silk fusion. By any name it is exciting and beautiful, innovative, rich in lustre, with a smooth or textured surface. A spectrum of unspun silk fibres is arranged and fused with an adhesive medium to produce a “felt” of varying thicknesses. Silk-fused fibres can be crinkled while wet and they will hold their shape. Other fibres, feathers, and ribbons can be incorporated into the silk felt. It makes a perfect canvas for machine- or hand-stitching, quilting, three-dimensional sculptures, jewellery, wearable art, book coverings, collage, and almost any project imaginable.

The aim of this workshop is to take a fresh look at hand knitting, forget knitting patterns, and explore some of the creative possibilities. The class will experiment with different ways of constructing knitted garments through different stitches and methods. The group will continue the experiments for as long as possible, so that students develop new ideas and try things they have not explored before.

The ability to mix and thicken natural dyes opens up many possibilities for creating designs on fabric that are simply not possible with immersion dyeing.

Women in the Orient, wealth worn as part of the head adornment.

One of the most spectacular exhibitions of textiles we've ever seen. Women in the Orient is on display at the Quai Branly Museum in Paris until May 15. The exhibition consists of pieces from musée du quai Branly collections and the Widad Kamel Kawar collection, and is designed by Christian Lacroix who "conceived the route through the exhibition as a poetical perambulation. The garments form a motionless, hovering procession. They inhabit a colourful world where, bathed in warm and comforting light, the designer's imagination is projected into a dreamlike East."
