the MAIWA JOURNAL

Throughout history, if you wanted to learn about natural dyes, India was the place to go. For a number of reasons that were historical, political, and cultural; hand-textile traditions survived and flourished in India. If you knew where to look, you could find weaving, spinning and dyeing being done in rural and urban areas using ingenious techniques. For 30 years Maiwa has documented much of that knowledge and shared it: in documentary films, in workshops, in artisan masterclasses, and in working with artisans using traditional techniques.

WOODEN PRINTING BLOCKS FROM INDIA

THE MOVEABLE TYPE OF FABRIC DESIGN

Block printed cloth is incredible.
But where do all those wooden blocks come from?
From another entire community: the community of block carvers. Maiwa keeps a large number of block carvers in business. Wooden blocks eventually wear out and need to be recut. We also commission blocks to sell in our stores. Some are designed by us, and some designed by the very clever geometric imaginations of the carvers themselves. We've just had a huge order arrive - and they are fantastic!

From simple figures to a set of four Ajrakh blocks
$3.50 — $198.95

TEN-THOUSAND METRES OF ORGANIC COTTON

Over six miles of fabric to create a difference ...

Maiwa has just received its largest order of organic cloth.
The same beautiful cloth that we use in our clothing is now available to artisans everywhere through our online store, in Maiwa East, and in Maiwa Supply. We have a variety of weaves and surfaces for every project: from diaphanous mulls with transparency and flow, to the cotton we use in our organic bedding and jackets, to a robust canvas - perfect for bags and  heavier projects.

Make your next creation on organic cotton and make a difference.

SEE OUR ORGANIC COTTON YARDAGE HERE

We have plain weave in light, medium and heavy. We have a canvas weight, a mull in natural and white, and a beautiful slub, with fine variations in the threads that give it a wonderful hand and drape.
