Over the centuries, communities of block printers have often migrated. When they do, their designs and ways of working change and evolve. This is certainly true of the Mumbai block printers. Originally dyers from Kachchh, Gujarat, they have taken the art of hand block printing in a completely new direction. Still working with natural dyes and traditional processes, they only work in contemporary designs they themselves create.
Made with fine handwoven cotton that has been masterfully block printed with natural dyes. Featuring contemporary wood blocks specially cut to imitate distressed painterly techniques, combined with the more familiar play of repeat geometric forms. The handwoven cloth, in combination with natural dyes, glows with an incredible vibrancy and has elegant drape.
Leatherwork from the Artisans Alliance of Jawaja. These pieces are completely hand-worked by skilled craftspeople from the stitched details to the burnished finish on the leather. Jawaja makes some of the most enduring items we have ever seen.
