the MAIWA JOURNAL

Last month we were in India's Kutch desert visiting the Khatris. They were very keen to show us the improvements that they have already made to the new land to get it ready for Ajrakh production. Many of you will recall that last year the Maiwa Foundation held a series of auctions and fundraisers to facilitate the land purchase. The new land became necessary due to the falling water tables and water contamination.

Two major structures are now complete. The first is a series of tanks which permit the water to be used four times before it is let out to irrigate the fields. Water use and conservation is of prime importance here.

The second structure is a wood fired dye kiln. The design permits very large copper pots to be raised to the correct temperature for dyeing. It minimizes fuel use and eliminates many of the problems associated with the open kettle method of heating. The dyer will climb the steps and monitor the works from above.

With September came the news that the blockprinters of Dhamadka and Ajrakhpur have finalized the purchase of their new land. In the spring of 2009 the Maiwa Foundation organized a series of fundraising auctions to provide capital for the new purchase. The site of the former blockprinting studios had become unusable due to falling water tables. What water there was had increasing concentration of impurities such as iron and salt.

The auctions were a fantastic success. We would like to thank everyone who helped, purchased or donated to make the acquisition of the new lands a reality. The Khatris have sent us these photos as well as many expressions of their sincere gratitude.

In 2007 Ismail and Razzaque participated in the Maiwa Textile Symposium. We've made the audio from the presentations available as a series of podcasts:

The music was fantastic, the food exceptional, the atmosphere exotic, and the Gallery full. Organizer Danielle Bush said, "The evening was magical, as always Chai brings together groups of beautiful people who share an interest in great food, music, dance, and who love to support a wonderful cause."

Our recent collaboration with Chai Gallery, "One Night on the Silk Road" was a night to be remembered indeed. Here we see one of the lucky raffle winners, Chika (who also sang at the event) with a collection of 4 DVDs, an ajrakh scarf and a wooden printing block, all contained in an antique teak platter.

A group of very talented musicians played that evening, including I Am Solidus, Chika Buston, and Tambura Rasa. The evening closed with Bocephus King, a.k.a. Jamie Perry.

The Maiwa Foundation raised over two-thousand dollars for Project Dhamadka. The financial goal was reached through generosity of spirit and an enchanting evening.

We encourage everyone to keep an eye on the Chai Gallery. They hold regular events that are quickly becoming a sensation in the Vancouver music scene. Maiwa is already looking forward to future collaborations.

Project Dhamadka got another boost on Saturday at the Bowen Island Ajrakh Auction. Organized by Mariana Holbrook, Judi Gedye and Maiwa Handprints, the auction raised over $7000. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped display textiles, provide food, track bids and make this event such a success.

It was a beautiful setting at the Cates Hill Chapel. Auction pieces included clothing, jewelry, embroideries, and quilts. Exhibition quality, double-side ajrakhs, were donated by the Khatri's and the other pieces were donated by Maiwa Handprints to raise money to help relocate the traditional blockprinting community of Dhamadka. The Maiwa Foundation would like to thank everyone who came out.

The Bowen Island newspaper, Undercurrents, ran two stories leading up to the auction. They are linked here. The first ran on April 30 and the second ran on May 8, 2009.
