On March 8, 2011, Maiwa visited the University of British Columbia to present some new challenges to the students of APSC 263. Last years projects were such a success that we were very keen to present some new problems. After discussions with artisans in India we gathered about ten projects that might be appropriate, from these an advisory group selected four that had the best fit with engineering goals. Here’s the four that were chosen:

Down the way and around the bend... would be an accurate description of the lineup for the 2011 Textile Symposium registration. Online, there was a similar lineup forming in cyberspace - the system processed over 100 registrations in the first five minutes alone.

Our favourite event. The dyepots are exhausted, the last stitches are in place, the lectures are over although still a hot topic of conversation. We put on a spread, bring in a live band, and let loose.

Jorie Johnson has developed her own innovative approach to the 8,000-year-old central-Asian technique of feltmaking.

By working various materials such as silk, rayon, and mohair into the felt product, Jorie obtains painterly textures that are never static. Rich colours complement the fibre variations, resulting in a cloth that speaks with a voice of lightness and strength.

In January 2011, participants in the Maiwa Natural Dye Masterclass held in Bengal, India, were given a challenge: use the new knowledge gained during this workshop to create one exhibition-quality piece. The piece could have a value up to 20,000 Indian rupees ($500). Participants were given six months to complete the work.

Come and see what the artisans have produced to meet the challenge. Join us for the unveiling of a unique set of masterworks. There will be a short presentation, light food, and refreshments.

The Natural Dye Masterclass was sponsored by the Maiwa Foundation.

An exhibition of some of the exceptional work that is at the heart of Mexico’s traditional textile revival. The title of this exhibition is a translation of “Sna Jolobil” from Tzotzil. Sna Jolobil is also the name of one of the largest artisans’ co-operatives, representing over 800 weavers from 20 Tzotzil- and Tzeltal-speaking Mayan communities in the Chiapas highlands.

Join us for an exhibit of contemporary work from Chiapas, Oaxaca, and other areas. There will be a short presentation, light food, and refreshments.

Dorothy Caldwell’s talk illustrates how her textile art is an ongoing exploration of a sense of place.

Her long-time interest in how humans mark the landscape – through patterns of settlement, agricultural practices, and built heritage – are translated onto cloth through dyeing, printing, and stitching.

Jorie Johnson, owner of Joi Rae Textile Studio in southern Kyoto, Japan, will present a talk about her life, her interest in woolly animals, and her current work in the studio.

Kyoto, the last depot on the Silk Road, has proved to be a great inspiration. She also found fertile ground in the artistic and academic communities of this ancient capital.

In 2011, Michel Garcia returns from France to provide a survey of some of the most interesting facets of his work as a natural dye chemist.

Well versed in both botany and chemistry, Michel Garcia is perhaps most widely recognized as the founder of Couleur Garance, the garden of natural dye plants created in Lauris, France. As a curious investigator of dyestuff and dye procedures, Mr. Garcia has been asked to troubleshoot and fine-tune natural dye works all over the world.

For the dyer, the many choices of available colours can lead to confusion and disappointment in colour outcomes. This class will help students choose the pure colour that is suitable for developing a personal palette. Carol has dyed over 80 individual palettes which she will share with you through slide presentations, discussions, and hands-on dyeing. Brilliant yellows, passionate purples, rich reds, astounding blues, and soothing greens as well as the many necessary neutrals will be achieved through mixing using Procion MX dyes.
