A LOOK AT THE PROCESS

At Maiwa, we are passionate about everything we do - but nothing more so than education and the sharing of knowledge. We are so proud of the Maiwa School of Textiles and incredibly excited to have launched the school online. In the past three years our online workshops have reached hundreds of students from all over the world.

We loved our in-person workshops but what online has allowed us all do is really teach our hearts out. We have students for eight to sixteen weeks in our online workshops and we can really get deep with our teaching and processes. Our commitment to excellence is at the core of all our workshops.

But what really does go into creating a world-class online natural dye workshop?

Ideas are born through many months of meetings perfecting everything for each workshop. Our educators, designers, film makers, tech maestros, editors, perfect each module, right down to the finest details so that learning can thrive brilliantly. We first start with writing each module and rigorously testing each step being taught. This can take a couple of months. We then script it for filming. We have our own film studio and the filming can take from two to six months. After that all the digital files from 6 cameras go into the editing stage. We use Final cut Pro for that. Editing is the most time consuming step of the whole process but it is the brilliance of our editors that really bring the learning experience of each module alive.

Another team works on all the printable students work books that accompany each module of each workshop. This team also meticulously cross checks all information from the videos, pdf’s, and FAQ’s.

Meanwhile, yet another team works on designing and building the supply kits which can be optionally purchased with the workshop. They are curated for each workshop. They are generous, in-depth and designed so that from the moment they are opened, the student knows they are exactly in the right place and time to be taking this workshop. Stocked with fabrics, yarns, dyes, mordants, tannins . . . they are like a studio in a box — full of the anticipation of completely being  immersed in the learning of natural dyeing.

But it doesn’t end there. Once the workshop is live, a team of Maiwa instructors answers student questions three times a week (and one time a week after the course ends). This support team, in addition to the teacher, is part of what sets these online workshops apart. Students have personal access to the instructors in their own studio, at their own pace, with their own water, setup, challenges, questions.

Do join us - we would love to have you on one of our learning journeys!
