BOOKS THAT INSPIRE US
TEXTILES, NATURAL DYES, PIGMENTS & MORE

There is nothing quite as comforting as a good book. We know this to be true — and so we have selected some highly recommended new releases and also some of our all-time favourites. Open the cover of any one of these and you will discover a whole new world.

IN PURSUIT OF COLOR

Anthropologist and textile artist Lauren MacDonald explores a practice that is both ancient and wholly modern: colouring cloth.

The pursuit of color has long spurred economic and social contest, and through this deeply researched volume we explore the stories that the materials used to dye cloth tell us about our complex relationship to nature, our troubling ideas about progress and our understanding of power and labor.

In Pursuit of Color brings together historic techniques, archive photography, specimens and present-day events to tell the histories of some of the world’s most important dyestuffs. A 32-page supplement accompanies the volume, detailing practical applications and the chemistry behind dyeing processes.

Available with either a red, blue or yellow cover.

FOUND AND GROUND:
A practical guide to making your own foraged paints

Caroline Ross is doing for pigments what Jason Logan has done for ink; in this practical guide where readers are taken, step by step, along the pathway to creating their own colour. Mainly focused on mineral sources that can be foraged, the book also covers paints and inks and artist material such as brushes. For anyone wanting to make their own art materials - this is a great place to start.

BOOK OF EARTH
Heidi Gustafson’s publication is a love poem to the earth disguised as a guide to mineral pigments. It is a spiritual quest disguised as a large format hardcover book. Heidi is  motivated by a beautiful infatuation. She has journeyed through chemistry, anthropology, archeology, natural history and ancient wisdoms in an attempt to understand not only the earth and its chromatic gifts, but also the source of her devotion. The literary quotes and references almost outnumber the pigment samples.

There is also much practical magic here. Recipes for working with various binders, tips on grinding and levigation. How to respectfully engage with what the earth has to offer. Why it is important.

FLEECE & FIBRE
An intimate portrait of the fibreshed of Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. McCabe’s book provides much valuable information on breeds, wools, and fibres, but it is also a testament to the beauty and integrity of rural life. Anyone who works with fibre should have this book

FARM & FOLK QUILT ALCHEMY
Farm & Folk Quilt Alchemy explores natural dyeing methods and details the process of creating a quilt from scratch. With an emphasis on the slow and intentional aspects of hand stitching, Buscaglia’s quilts are artful and satisfying to create. By focusing on select dye plants and recipes, ideal for cotton and linen, Buscaglia teaches how to achieve consistent and beautiful results using traditional handwork techniques.
