Banjara stitchwork on hand-crafted leather from the Artisan Alliance of Jawaja — an incredible combination.
It takes a certain strength of character to make it in the world as an artisan. Often we see that strength reflected in the way people work: the bold designs they choose, or the investment they make in every detail, each stitch and each finishing touch of an object.
The leatherworkers of Jawaja (heirs to centuries of skill making harnesses, saddles, and bags) pair beautifully with Banjara embroiderers (who enjoy a renowned heritage as transporters - using trains of thousands of laden oxen). Both communities maintain their traditional ways of working, their design sense and motifs. Together they create inspired objects that can be found nowhere else.
Maiwa has worked closely with the Artisan's Alliance of Jawaja for over twenty years. We have worked on product development and collaborations with other artisans. Most recently we have combined the skills of the Jawaja Leatherworkers with Banjara embroidery. While the cotton lining of many of the bags is traditionally block printed by the Dabu mud resist method.
BANJARA EMBROIDERY
The Banjara, a semi-nomadic group found throughout the Indian subcontinent, are renowned for their highly colourful textiles. Embellished with mirrors, shells, & intricate embroidery, Banjara work displays a surprisingly modern aesthetic. It’s a celebration of the strength of the women who practice it.
