Students will find out as they learn essential temporary and permanent stitches, suitable seam finishes, thoughtful pressing techniques, and a variety of design element details related to their garment of choice.
This workshop is ideal for individuals who are intrigued by the world of hand-sewing, but are hesitant to take the jump on their own. Students will enter a rewarding and intricate world of vintage hand stitches and techniques that are relevant to both vintage and modern garments.

Over many years, Maiwa has travelled the world researching textile processes and the cultures that support them. During this time we have also encountered cultures with a long history of unsurpassed skill in working precious metals.
Maiwa seeks out traditional items, such as amulets, broaches, turquoise, lapis and amber. When working in India we employ local silversmiths to set stones and traditional pieces in 92.5% silver settings.
We are happy to say that in India, our enthusiasm for traditional pieces has ignited renewed interest in traditional work. Often the combination of antique elements in new settings provides the perfect contrast to fire the imagination. These are pieces with a history and a story, adornment that whispers in its own voice.

KANTHA QUILTS
THE FESTIVE STITCH
Fields of colour and brilliant patchwork all covered with tight running stitches. These quilts are medium weight and big personality.
Kantha quilts are made for household use in rural parts of Bengal and Bangladesh. Favourite prints, saris, and beloved lengths of cloth are stitched together with plain and coloured threads. Every quilter has her own individual style. These quilts are used as bedcovers, blankets, tablecloths, picnic blankets, car blankets, couch blankets ... there is no limit to the utility of these textiles.

Indigo is traditionally made into cakes as part of the process of extracting it from the indigo plant. These cakes are insoluble, which made them ideal for long distance trade (they would not come to harm on a long ocean voyage). The dyer would then grind the cakes to a fine powder before use in an indigo vat.
This is the same excellent quality indigo we sell in powdered form. Indigo cakes are available in 100g and 750g jars.

WORKING FROM THE BLOCK
APRIL 24-28, 2019
In architectural terms, pattern blocks are the foundation for all garment construction. In this advanced five-day workshop, students will learn how to manipulate and alter a basic set of dress blocks (bodice, skirt, and sleeve) through flat-pattern drafting techniques. Students will learn dart manipulation, sleeve variations, skirt variations, neckline and collar variations, and techniques to create style lines and add fullness. LEARN TO KNIT
APRIL 2, 2019 - First Offering - (6:30PM - 9:30PM)

This three-hour evening workshop is perfect for beginning knitters. Anyone new to knitting, who has forgotten how, or who never quite grasped the concept of casting stitches onto a needle will find themselves in the right place.
The very basic elements of knitting will be explored: casting stitches onto a needle, executing knit and purl stitches, and binding stitches off. Instruction will be given primarily in the English style of knitting; however, the Continental style will also be explained and demonstrated.
Practice is the only way to become proficient and aids greatly in the overall enjoyment of the craft. To facilitate this, a cowl pattern that incorporates everything learned in the class will be provided.
Students interested in progressing further are encouraged to register for Knitting: Basics and Beyond.

Here is a great opportunity to take knitting to the next level — read and understand not only a pattern but the knitting itself. Students will learn ways to cast on, bind off, increase and decrease stitches, and knit lace and cable stitch. The class will read written knitting patterns, charts, and most important of all, the knitted stitch.
