Maiwa Kits. Everything collected in one box. Our kits are a small gathering of everything you need to focus on the mysterious and magical process of working with tannins and iron.

Grey's are complex when they are made with natural dyes. Tannin and iron combine on cloth to create delicate, nuanced shades. Together they speak about slate, pensive skies, and a darkness that still contains light.

For a thorough introduction to natural dyes including procedures, tannins, mordants, and recipes, see our "Maiwa Guide to Natural Dyes" at naturaldyes.ca.

TANNINS AT WORK

Myrobolan is a tannin rich dye that reacts with ferrous sulfate to create a neutral grey. You can get different shades of grey by using anywhere between 0.5% WOF to 4% WOF ferrous sulfate. Curious about "WOF"? We've got a free tutorial on it here (courtesy the Maiwa School of Textiles).

Gallnut gives a beautiful purplish-grey. You can get different depths of grey by using between 0.5% WOF to 4% WOF ferrous sulfate. Still curious about "WOF"? We have more information in our text-based instructions over at naturaldyes.ca.

Pomegranate gives a greenish-grey. You can get different depths of grey by using between 0.5% WOF to 4% WOF ferrous sulfate.

THE SHAPED RESIST KIT

Our shaped resist kit is for simple shibori and itajime techniques. Comes with 40 wooden tongue depressors and 60 small elastic bands.

This journal has been an idea of ours for a long time. It is a little like a combination of a travel journal and a natural dye journal. It is the journal we have always wanted.

EXPLORING GREYS & PATTERN

Sophena Kwon made a tutorial in collaboration Vancouver's Wings + Horns (now on pause). It is a simple and easy way to introduce some complex patterning and also explore the fundamental reaction of iron and tannin.
