CARAVAN BLANKETS

30% OFF

Nights in the desert can be cold. When the sun goes down and the heat of the day leaves the earth, everything goes quiet. The air can be chilly, but nomadic pastoralists keep themselves warm with these robust and dramatic wool blankets.

BHUJODI SHAWLS

Drape a masterpiece over your shoulder.
When people ask us about the most spectacular handweave being done today, we think of a few places in India. One of the groups that top that list is the Vankar family of Bhujodi.

The weavers of Bhujodi are known as some of the most accomplished artisans working in handloom today. They have a wide range of skills and can bring their traditional design sense to play in many formats. See, for example, this incredible selection of panel blankets, bed covers, throws, scarves, and shawls.

Traditional handloom is a remarkably flexible technology. Handloom permits weaving from fibres too fine to be handled by industrial mills. The mechanism of the loom (almost always worked with bare feet) permits the weaver to judge by feel when it is too damp, or too dry to continue working with hand spun cotton.

This bag is the result of bringing two great artisan communities together. Leatherworkers from Central Rajasthan (The Artisans Alliance of Jawaja) and weavers from the western Kachchh Desert (Vankar weavers of Bhujodi). This is more than just a bag, it is an example of artisans working together to create beautiful, exceptional pieces.

BHUJODI SHAWLS

Drape a masterpiece over your shoulder.

There is handweave and there is handweave.

The Vankar community of Bhujodi, India, has held steadfast in their belief that handweave matters: that skill can be taught, maintained, and improved; and that each time you warp up a loom, you are given the opportunity to express yourself in thread.

What the weavers believe, shows so clearly in these shawls. Naturally dyed threads woven into impeccable geometries, all natural fibres.

A NEW INNOVATION

For years we have worked with Dhebaria Rabari embroiderers. They make very playful, geometric patters through the appliqué technique. We also partner with block printing families who use natural dyes and who work in the Ajrakh tradition. The embroiderers and block printers live in the same area. And so, another collaboration was born.

BHUJODI & RABARI
SHAWLS

Two communities working side by side.

These shawls are all woven by the master weavers of Bhujodi. Some are finished with a weavers vision: the pattern, colour, and placement is accomplished on the loom. But others are passed on to the skilled craftspeople of the Rabari community. The Rabari shawls are finished with wandering lines of running stitch and the appliqué work that has made them famous.

A Maiwa shawl is always more than just cloth.

BHUJODI SHAWLS

A shawl is more than you might think...

It stays with you when the seasons change
a familiar length of cloth.

It covers you when the sun is bold
and warms you on cool evenings.

It is masterfully made, a song of dexterity and skill
and all the plans that weavers make for the future.

That it can say all this in simple threads
ingeniously tangled
is kind of a miracle.
