Nothing can match an artisan's dedication to tradition.
So it is both a surprise and an inspiration to see hand carved wooden blocks being used in new ways to deliver colour on cloth.
These shawls are masterfully produced. They were our first introduction to the work of a community of hand block printers working in Mumbai.
Many are printed on a heavier silk where the drape and sheen of the cloth makes the natural dyes sing. The patterns, motifs and colours are sumptuous, especially when combined with the contemporary distressed backgrounds. Like music, they are harmoniously composed and they can be worn with almost anything.
