the MAIWA JOURNAL

THE WORLDS MOST FAMOUS COLOUR

At Maiwa, we are known for our infatuation with indigo. It's a long lasting love for all the shades this remarkable dye can give. From the ocean's depths to the colour of the sky. It's a colour that contains multitudes.

THE EFFORTLESS AESTHETIC

Like a summer day, our new block printed clothing is comfortable and easy to live in. Natural dyes on organic medium-weight cotton, tops and shorts, wrap tops and wrap skirts, men's shirts. Colour, pattern, style — the effortless aesthetic.

We're pretty happy with the design of this clothing: the Rajasthan top has shell buttons down the front and back (can be worn open or closed), ingenious full sleeves that can be worn long, cuffed, or rolled. Pair or contrast them with the incredible Rajasthan shorts — wear them fitted or oversized.

Wrap up for an elegant aesthetic in the Nila wrap top and Cochin wrap skirt. Also hand block-printed with natural dyes on organic cotton. Worn together, these two garments can give the appearance of a dress. The wrap style is a Maiwa favourite — the freedom of fit and style possibilities are truly amazing.

HAND BLOCK PRINTED BEDDING
NATURAL DYES ON ORGANIC COTTON

AJRAKH
BLOCK PRINTED QUILTS

A queen-sized hand-stitched quilt — pairing two stunning, naturally dyed Ajrakh textiles. Lightweight, perfect for a summer quilt, a couch, or to add a little warmth or beautiful patterning to your home.

Each part of an Ajrakh requires its own set of blocks: a set for the field in the centre and multiple sets to create the borders. The front of these quilts feature traditional geometric motifs framed by elaborate border designs. The back is a complimentary repeating over-all block print.

Ajrakh is a traditional style of block printing that uses hand-carved wooden blocks to print natural dyes on organic cotton. These Ajrakhs are made by a family that has been block printing for over nine generations - the Khatri family residing in the Kachchh desert of Gujarat, India.

The process of making an Ajrakh is a long one, involving between 13 and twenty distinct steps. The many processes of scouring, washing, printing, dyeing and final washing can take up to three weeks to complete. Much of the beauty and depth of Ajrakh cloth comes from the intricacy of the imprint that is left by the artisan’s hand. Slight variations are to be celebrated.

THE AJRAKH ARTISANS

In this short clip Jabbar Khatri carefully places wooden printing blocks to create a geometric design. Read more about the ajrakh artisans here.

HAND BLOCK PRINTED BEDDING
NATURAL DYES ON ORGANIC COTTON

15 NEW PATTERNS

Ajrakh is a traditional block printing technique. All our bedding is printed with natural dyes on organic cotton. For centuries, wooden blocks have been used to print eloquent geometric patterns on cotton. These patterns are timeless, revealing a remarkable play between figure and line.

When we brought out our new gossamer weight linen - our lightest weight so far - we gave some to one of the best weavers we know: Sabrina Sachiko Niebler. The result confirmed our belief in both the dyeing and the spin of our honest yarns.

Sachi has made quite a name for herself as an artisan working through the practice of making kami-ito (paper thread) and weaving it into cloth (known as shifu). She also makes weavings of exceptional character by working with yarns she naturally dyes with osage and marigold. Sachi has recently been featured in the book Yarn • Thread • String (available online) - published by Uppercase.

We are very proud to say that Sachi is also on staff with Maiwa and we look to her often for anything related to weaving. See her work, beautifully photographed, at sabrinasachiko.com or visit her instagram feed @sabrinasachiko.

After years of working with artisan weavers and knitters, Maiwa has developed its own line of naturally dyed yarns. These yarns are everything we have been looking for in a spun fibre.

Our Linen Honest Yarn shows the raw beauty of Belgian flax, spun in Bengal. It offers a wonderful buttery hand and the exceptional weight and presence that only linen can give.

CONES

Gossamer
Our lightest weight yarn, beautiful for a range of projects & techniques; lacemaking, knitting, embroidery, and weaving.

Cobweb
Our second lightest weight yarn, beautiful for weaving projects or for fine knitting and crochet lace.  It loves being thrown in a shuttle and makes an ideal weft.

SKEINS

Lace
Great for fine knitting and crochet: summer shawls, lace projects, open work, and fine warm weather garments.

Fingering
Great for fine knitting and crochet.

Sport
A heavier weight. Project suggestions include a market bag, draped summer sweaters, spring top, woven dish towels.

Linen is one of the more challenging fibres to dye naturally, especially to dye well. But we feel we've nailed it. Beautiful rich jewel-like tones that are both deep and even. Lighter colours that are consistent, level, and delicate without being weak. Colours that are as satisfying to work with as the act of creating.

Maiwa's colour development and testing goes deep. We've spent decades beside the dye pot working with materials like cutch, madder, lac, myrobalan, pomegranate and of course, indigo. These yarns have excellent light and wash fastness — we are so proud of them.

You can also buy Maiwa's honest yarns undyed and colour them yourself. To know how we do ours, visit our website at naturaldyes.ca
