HAND PAINTED WITH NATURAL DYES

Hand painting cloth with natural dyes is an ancient art. In India it is known as kalamkari, which means "pen work". The freedom to place natural colour in a painterly way requires considerable skill and natural dye knowledge.

These contemporary works are the genius of Bengali artist Silpinwita Das, daughter of the famous kalamkari painter Ajit Das. Silpinwita's works are inspired by folk art and her studies of the landscape of Santinikan, which she describes as "red soil, and meadows of lush green paddy fields, where rows of chhatim trees and palms charmed me from the very beginning."

Silpinwita Das has named her work "Haridra". In Sanskrit, “haridra” means yellow, the colour of sunlight, warmth and spirituality. Each work is unique, distinct and entirely hand made. Each brings life and movement wherever it is placed, styled as a shawl, hung on a wall, or draped across a table.

The colour pallet is achieved with natural dyes; the black colour is created through a fermentation process using scrap iron, molasses, mahua flower, chickpea flour and betel leaf. Other colours come to life with Indian madder root, catechu (cutch), indigo, marigold flowers, pomegranate rinds, turmeric and myrobalan.

Each shawl is one-of-a-kind. There is only one of each design.

IN PREPARATION FOR OUR NEXT REGISTRATION
AUGUST 15th 2022

MAIWA SCHOOL OF TEXTILES

IS NOW HOSTING OUR DOCUMENTARIES AS

Each week running up to our August 15th registration opening, Maiwa will announce one of our documentary videos as a free lesson. This is just one more aspect of our encouragement of  natural dyes and traditional crafts.

This week's documentary is:

THROUGH THE EYE OF A NEEDLE

 Stories from an Indian Desert
by Maiwa & KMVS

30 Minute documentary video. 2003.

This is the story of a unique group of craftswomen. Follow their journey as they return to creating the world-class embroidery that made their ancestors famous. The incredible stories of the women from the Kutch Mahila Vikas Sangathan co-operative (KMVS) are recorded here through video, song, laughter, and stitch. History here is worn as generations of knowledge are passed down through embroidered designs. Long a valuable item of trade, the embroideries also provide a common ground for women to meet and bring their stories to the world. Experience the amazing landscape of the Kutch desert on India’s western border, the remarkable diversity of the communities who live here, and the breathtaking colours of their textiles.

Directed by Charllotte Kwon. Written by Charllotte Kwon and Tim McLaughlin, edited by Tim McLaughlin.

This has been the most wonderful course. The videos are SO well put together (even my partner's ears will perk up when he hears the opening theme music and he'll come over to watch for a purely aesthetic experience :)). Instructions are easy to follow, and I love how you provide historical background on the dyes, as well as the important how-tos. The course has whet my appetite for ink-making and has also flooded me with creative inspiration. I would absolutely recommend future iterations of this course to others.
— Madeleine

Thanks for a great workshop.  It is a wonderful way to learn and the creativity in the making of the videos is  inspiring.
— Mary

I wanted to let you know how seamless you have made this learning experience for me. Your knowledge, print and video instruction was very clear and concise. I'm happy with all of the inks made through the various processes/techniques and supplies suggested. I can't wait for the next module to drop and look forward to a follow-up course in the near future!
— Shirley

Thank you for an amazing class! This is by far the best online class I have taken.  So thoughtful in the design, pacing, materials and Q&A format. And so very beautifully produced. I look forward to coming to Vancouver again one day and visiting your shops and hopefully taking a class in person. But in the meantime, I look forward to more online classes with you! Thank you so much for all your wonderful efforts in making this such a great class.
— Fran

I teared up a little, watching that last video - I think that's the first time a workshop has left such an emotional impression. Bravo. I absolutely loved this workshop. The format works very well, I learned a lot, I'm inspired, and it was quite soothing to watch - something I really appreciate right now.
— Fazia

At Maiwa we work with artisans to create exceptional cloth. Patterns are always changing and this means that some are no longer available. But each cloth holds a memory that is dear to us and so we sometimes include them to emphasize that cloth is always so much more than simply cloth. It makes us who we are and gives us the settings we cherish.

Weaving by Sabrino Sachiko Niebler

See All Honest Yarns Here

After years of working with artisan weavers and knitters, Maiwa has developed its own line of naturally dyed yarns. These yarns are everything we have been looking for in a spun fibre.

Our Linen Honest Yarn shows the raw beauty of Belgian flax, spun in Bengal. It offers a wonderful buttery hand and the exceptional weight and presence that only linen can give.

Linen is one of the more challenging fibres to dye naturally, especially to dye well. But we feel we've nailed it. Beautiful rich jewel-like tones that are both deep and even. Lighter colours that are consistent, level, and delicate without being weak. Colours that are as satisfying to work with as the act of creating.

Maiwa's colour development and testing goes deep. We've spent decades beside the dye pot working with materials like cutch, madder, lac, myrobalan, pomegranate and of course, indigo. These yarns have excellent light and wash fastness — we are so proud of them.

You can also buy Maiwa's honest yarns undyed and colour them yourself. To know how we do ours, visit our website at naturaldyes.ca

When we brought out our new gossamer weight linen - our lightest weight so far - we gave some to one of the best weavers we know: Sabrina Sachiko Niebler. The result confirmed our belief in both the dyeing and the spin of our honest yarns.

Sachi has made quite a name for herself as an artisan working through the practice of making kami-ito (paper thread) and weaving it into cloth (known as shifu). She also makes weavings of exceptional character by working with yarns she naturally dyes with osage and marigold. Sachi has recently been featured in the book Yarn • Thread • String (available online) - published by Uppercase.

We are very proud to say that Sachi is also on staff with Maiwa and we look to her often for anything related to weaving. See her work, beautifully photographed, at sabrinasachiko.com or visit her instagram feed @sabrinasachiko.
