Maiwa Clothing — Colour Mixing on the Loom — The Heart of Artisan Cloth

by - Wednesday, October 11, 2023

Weavers know that cloth is like architecture. You can build it with structure and form and depending on where and how you place your threads, you will achieve desirable effects with colour, texture, drape and movement.

For our clothing, we don't just choose a coloured swatch from a fabric catalogue, we begin by hand-spinning and hand-dyeing the threads themselves. A world of possibility opens up. We can colour mix on the loom. We can tweak colours through a careful selection of warp and weft threads, and through choosing different weaving structures, we can make the colours play together. The creative possibilities run deep.

When we are showing our new garments, we are showing something that has been thought out completely - down to the placement of each thread. We are not designing for a season that quickly passes, we are designing for the life of the thread, the life of the cloth, and the life of the person who wears the cloth.
