Artisan Weaving & Honest Yarn

by - Wednesday, June 02, 2021

When we brought out our new gossamer weight linen - our lightest weight so far - we gave some to one of the best weavers we know: Sabrina Sachiko Niebler. The result confirmed our belief in both the dyeing and the spin of our honest yarns.

Sachi has made quite a name for herself as an artisan working through the practice of making kami-ito (paper thread) and weaving it into cloth (known as shifu). She also makes weavings of exceptional character by working with yarns she naturally dyes with osage and marigold. Sachi has recently been featured in the book Yarn • Thread • String (available online) - published by Uppercase.

We are very proud to say that Sachi is also on staff with Maiwa and we look to her often for anything related to weaving. See her work, beautifully photographed, at sabrinasachiko.com or visit her instagram feed @sabrinasachiko.

After years of working with artisan weavers and knitters, Maiwa has developed its own line of naturally dyed yarns. These yarns are everything we have been looking for in a spun fibre.

Our Linen Honest Yarn shows the raw beauty of Belgian flax, spun in Bengal. It offers a wonderful buttery hand and the exceptional weight and presence that only linen can give.

CONES

Gossamer
Our lightest weight yarn, beautiful for a range of projects & techniques; lacemaking, knitting, embroidery, and weaving.

Cobweb
Our second lightest weight yarn, beautiful for weaving projects or for fine knitting and crochet lace.  It loves being thrown in a shuttle and makes an ideal weft.

SKEINS

Lace
Great for fine knitting and crochet: summer shawls, lace projects, open work, and fine warm weather garments.

Fingering
Great for fine knitting and crochet.

Sport
A heavier weight. Project suggestions include a market bag, draped summer sweaters, spring top, woven dish towels.

Linen is one of the more challenging fibres to dye naturally, especially to dye well. But we feel we've nailed it. Beautiful rich jewel-like tones that are both deep and even. Lighter colours that are consistent, level, and delicate without being weak. Colours that are as satisfying to work with as the act of creating.

Maiwa's colour development and testing goes deep. We've spent decades beside the dye pot working with materials like cutch, madder, lac, myrobalan, pomegranate and of course, indigo. These yarns have excellent light and wash fastness — we are so proud of them.

You can also buy Maiwa's honest yarns undyed and colour them yourself. To know how we do ours, visit our website at naturaldyes.ca

To our U.S. customers – don't forget that the exchange rate works in your favour, it's like an extra discount.
