Inspired by Wings + Horns – A New Kit for Complex Greys
Maiwa loves collaborating. Mostly with artisans from far away, but sometimes with people closer to home. Maiwa's own Sophena Kwon has been making a little tutorial magic on our instagram feed and that caught the eye of Vancouver's Wings + Horns. Sophena put together a new tutorial based on tannin and iron on some of Wings + Horns shirts and we are loving the complex greys that she got. Below is her tutorial. Grey's are so complex when they are made with natural dyes. Tannin and iron combine on cloth to create the most nuanced shades. Together they speak about slate, pensive skies, and a darkness that still contains light. The above fabric has been patterned with simple shibori techniques.
THE TANNIN, IRON & SCARF KIT
A kit to make grey naturally. Myrobolan is a tannin rich dye that reacts with ferrous sulfate to create a neutral grey. You can get different shades of grey by using anywhere between 0.5%wof to 4%wof ferrous sulfate.
Included is a 225g of myrobolan, 100g ferrous sulfate & a cotton mull scarf.

Our shaped resist kit is for simple shibori and itajime techniques. Comes with 40 wooden tongue depressors and 60 small elastic bands.
THE TANNIN & IRON EXPLORATION KIT
This Kit lets you dive into the world of tannin greys. Myrobolan, pomegranate rind & gallnut are all rich in tannin that reacts with ferrou to create a number of different greys. In the sample below you can see (from left to right) that gallnut gives a purplish-grey, myrobolan gives a neutral stone-grey and pomegranate gives a greenish-grey. You can get different depths of grey by using between 0.5% WOF to 4% WOF ferrous sulfate.
