Well known for her intimate and detailed workshops, Jane Stafford has worked to become one of Canada's best-known weaving instructors. 

In 2011 she returned to the origins of her craft when she visited the Bengal weavers of India. Inspired and motivated by the creativity made possible through manipulating simple weave structures, Jane rethought her relationship to the architecture of cloth.

She is now sharing this knowledge in a new workshop
"Weaving: Inspiration from the Sari."

We have a limited number of spaces still availabe in this ground-breaking workshop.

$395 includes a $90 lab fee

Students in this workshop need to have solid weaving technique and an eight-shaft table loom. During the workshop students will migrate from loom to loom creating samples of six different fabrics. Students will receive their warps, weft materials, and detailed supply list one month prior to the workshop and must arrive with their looms fully dressed and ready to go.

Rachel Davey has contributed an evocative and poetic account of her visit with the Khatris of the Kutch Desert. Her story appeared yesterday in Hand/Eye online and can be found here:

Maiwa was asked to contribute some photos to her piece and we are proud to have a few of our images appear alongside such fine writing.

The Ajrakh that Rachel writes about can be found in our online store as can print versions of the wonderful Hand/Eye magazine.

We have put up pictures of one cloth going through sixteen stages of production. With a double-sided ajrakh these stages must be performed on each side of the cloth. It takes an entire set of wooden blocks to print an ajrakh. Sometimes the pattern is asymetric and so a separate set of blocks must be carved for each side. The pièce de résistance? A double-sided ajrakh printed with different colours on each side.
